For owners of the Xperia XZ1, XZ1 Compact and XZ Premium handsets, it looks like support has officially ended with no future updates planned (including security updates). All three models use the same software track, and the last update that they all received was
build number 47.2.A.11.228, adding the 1 September 2019 Android security patch.
There have been no updates since and Sony’s official ‘Software security’ page does not list these devices under those that are receiving periodic security updates. Assuming the company hasn’t just made a mistake, it is looking increasingly likely that support for these models are now over.
The phones were announced at IFA 2017, so have been out now for over two years. While we no longer expected any future major Android upgrades, we were still hopeful of longer security updates. Some Android manufacturers support phones for three years when it comes to security updates.
Would you be disappointed to see no more security updates on your Xperia XZ1, XZ1 Compact or XZ Premium? Will you be concerned to continue using your phone given potential security risks? Do security updates even matter to you? Let us know in the comments below.
No mention of Xperia XZ1, XZ1 Compact and XZ Premium for future security updates
