Excitement for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S20 is understandably running high, but there is plenty of steam in the Galaxy Fold 2 hype train as well. Especially now that the vertically folding, clamshell handset has been spotted in live images and could actually be joining the S20 on stage at the February 11 event.
Now a new scoop courtesy of a pretty reliable tipster, claims that the handset will stick to the older Snapdragon 855 chipset, instead of the new 865.
The reasons for this are unclear, but most likely the Galaxy Fold 2 has been in development for quite some time – before the Snapdragon 865 even came into existence.
Exclusive for @mysmartprice: Samsung’s new Galaxy Fold clamshell phone, the SM-F700F will feature Snadragon 855, NOT 865. It will also have a 10MP front camera. Galaxy A51, A71, S20 4G, S20+ 4G Production has also started in India. #Samsung Link: https://t.co/QY1cuXLjfU pic.twitter.com/Q5gD19qt0n — Ishan Agarwal (@ishanagarwal24) January 7, 2020
There is also the fact that the Snapdragon 865 lacks an internal modem, which would require a more complex design, which can’t be welcome overhead on what is already a very ambitious project.
Galaxy Fold 2 leaked images
Another bit of info on the upcoming SM-F700F clamshell, also shared by the source, pertains to the selfie camera. It is said to be a 10MP unit. This could potentially be the same module found in the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Note10+.
The only other bit of info we currently know about the Fold 2 is that it will apparently feature some kind of Super Fast charging. Perhaps it could have something to do with a potentially two-piece battery setup in the clamshell in the first place. We’ll just have to wait and see.
