MediaTek Dimensity 800 arrives – a 5G chipset for midrange smartphones

The Taiwanese manufacturer MediaTek promised a new product at CES 2020 and it delivered – say hello to the Dimensity 800 SoC, built on the 7nm process, that will bring 5G connectivity to premium midrange smartphones.

The first phones on the market will be available before the end of the first half of 2020, the company promised during the launch in Las Vegas.

The Dimensity 800 series 5G chipsets support 2CC carrier aggregation which brings over 30% wider coverage than other platforms with 1CC and no carrier aggregation. Of course it is designed to support both SA and NSA sub-6Ghz networks, multi-mode support from 2G to 5G and Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS). It also can work for services like VoNR to deliver voice and data over 5G.

The CPU has four Cortex-A76 cores at 2 GHz, and four more power-efficient Cortex-A55 units, also reaching 2 GHz.

The graphics unit is the same class as the one in the Dimensity 1000, combined with a tech called HyperEngine that boosts the hardware to perform better when gaming.

The ISP of the Dimensity 800 supports up to 64MP sensors or 32MP+16MP dual cameras. MediaTek included algorithms for AI-autofocus, autoexposure, auto white balance, noise reduction and HDR.
